By Geored@aol.com RETURN TO ME a.k.a. The movie that makes me so happy I cry BobBulges: Too many to count. BobBulgeScale: 3.5 (out of 5, with 5 being the highest) Favorite Bobisms: "We're gonna go to one of those water theme parks for the weekend." Favorite Grace-isms: "I'm getting a new heart, not a new ass." Favorite Megan-isms: "Hairy legs are your only link to reality." Favorite Angelo-ism: "Now they're drunk *and* disorderly." Shallow and Worthless Commentary: Where to start? This movie is simply amazing for its Beautiful!David content. On top of that, it makes me so fucking happy to watch it...the true "feel good" movie. Now, let me say that I'm probably not going to mention every single beautiful scene, so don't everyone be writing me "hey, what about....?"notes. Okay? The shallow pages are already five in number, right now, before I start trimming it a bit. Hey, the man is beautiful. And let's start with his feet. Jesus, the feet on that man. You can spot them from thirty thousand feet. Okay, slight exaggeration. But I, for one, instantly knew that was David with the gunboats for feet standing on the roof. And can I say how much I love his hands? The little wave he does to the guys as he's leaving. He's really a guy's guy in this movie, yet so romantic and chivalrous. :::sigh::: Pretty studly in the hard hat and flannel, and jumping down from the ladder too. Wet dog dance. Love the little jumping deal he does trying to get the dog to eat. Dig the trench over the partial tux. What is it about Tux shirts? They are kinda transparent, except for that white fronting. Why do I find that rather sexy? Very cute blow drying the pants. Cary Grant indeed. Love how he kisses and hugs on his wife at the fund raiser. Very sexy. Very debonair, he is. I have a real thing for the back of his head/neck/hairline when he's wearing the tux too. I don't know why. All the smiling is wonderful, but I think he actually looks more beautiful when he's all damp and angsty. I don't like Joely Richardson's hair at all. Too...whimpy. Love Bonnie's dress in that hospital scene. Anybody notice the little green/black ribbon on the sweatshirt? Anybody know what it means? Anyway, is this Chicago chic? The little sweatshirts over pretty print dresses? I like it, regardless. I especially like how Minnie/Grace has these little outfits with mismatched flower prints. It works for me. He's too gorgeous to be believed when talking to his wife, telling her how wonderful she is, dancing, kissing...and the look on his face when he hears the song? Wow. Love how he lip syncs, too. David looks like an angel when he's lying asleep on the floor, after collapsing beautifully in the entryway of his house. Then his eyes open and he still looks like a boy. Of course, I want to cuddle up with him and the dog. He needs a little lovin'. Cut to the zoo, a year later: dear god, those jeans should be illegal. Nicely bulgy. Almost too tight for a good bulge moment. He's just mad as hell, which makes him highly sexy. The moment in the movie that kills me every time is when he pauses in front of the camera in jeans/tee/sunglasses, outside the monkey house. He's framed perfectly and he's perfectly stunning. Two girls next to me in the theater during one showing had the vapors, I think. He does walk kinda like he's carrying a heavy load too. Then in the monkey house we actually get a better bulge, even though it's in profile. I gotta tell ya, the DVD is great cause you can slow him way down. He's so graceful, like a big cat. Then you have the chance to see how his whole body moves so beautifully. And you get to notice the big muscles that run from his neck to his shoulder. Love how Megan has all the kids clap for Grace off camera. Very cool. Love the moment where Bob pauses to put on his shades near Grace. Nice little touch, and David's back looks great too. David looks a bit tired when he's yelling at the zoo execs. Fits the character though. Very upset. Love the blue flannel, makes his eyes look blue. A little chest hair is a nice thing, too. Nice bulge again, but still not the best ever, the pants are too tight. If there is such a thing. They make his ass look great, though. Great bulge getting out of truck in front of his house (and during the surrounding scenes). His ass is fantastic going up the stairs into the house. Especially good bulge holding the kid up. Nice 5 o'clock shadow on his face. God, I love those narrow little hips. David's eyelashes just kill me when he's sitting in his truck outside O'Reilly's. Nice bulge as he is taking off his coat. The jeans aren't too tight and you can see a bit more...at least in my opinion. Don't really care for the chinos or dockers or whatever they are that he wears a lot in the remainder of the movie. They don't show off his assets well enough. Nice sweater though. Well, we do get a profile bulge when he's looking at the painting in the garden, so the Dockers ain't all bad. Nice bulge jeans after the date. I love the music, and he's so happy and goofy. Love that scene. Barely visible bulge during purple tee and Sammy Sosa comment. The jeans are a bit looser, so you get more. I love David in the blue and white outfit during their "talk" date at his house, despite the fact that the chinos/dockers aren't my favorite. Very lovely. And I like Minnie because she's an ugly cryer too. You know, the bulge he has when he gives her the bike is nearly scary. In a good way, of course. Very nice bulge as he walks into the restaurant after his crisis with Grace. He's so gorgeous. And I just adore the dark blue tie with the light colored suit during the dedication. Basically, he's totally yummy throughout the entire movie. Analysis: Much the same as I did with the shallow commentary, I'm just going to make comments in the order in which they occurred to me while I was watching the movie. I will start by saying that this movie is fabulous for its simplicity and sweetness, without being saccharine. I don't think there was a single actor that was mis-cast, despite the fact that there were one or two awkward scenes. All the acting was first rate. While Bonnie Hunt may show herself to be a first time director, not that *I* would know, she is a first rate writer. She and Don Lake put in so many little, tiny bits that were so subtle, yet perfect. I couldn't possibly name them all. Suffice it to say that she did a great job. That was some bad dubbing of Charlie and Elizabeth when they are coming out of the ape house. The "He only does that with you" is just a bit heavy handed. But then, not everyone is as bright as me. The scene between Bob and Elizabeth in their townhouse strikes me as a bit off, but it is completely made up for in the scenes at the benefit. Love Mr. Bennington, love the charm and the humor that David brings to this whole group of scenes. He leads the way in that whole segment and does a beautiful job. All these little touches that just make the movie, how he reacts to all the little weird things, like Mr. B and Celia. The water theme park thing killed me. The band seems rather cheesy, despite the fact that I love their music. But, they are supposed to be cheesy at events like that one. Everything is a bit cheesy. One of the perfect acting moments, in my opinion, is David standing in front of the door in the hospital with that music playing. His face is so perfect in its expression (or lack thereof), he does a fine job conveying a million different things: fear, pain, a certain numbness and disbelief. I really like the old guys, especially Carroll O'Connor and Robert Loggia. CO's choice of answering the phone before he actually picks up the receiver is lovely. The inter-cutting of Bob/Charlie with the Grace/Grandpa/Megan scenes are really nicely done. I get weepy on both sides, for Bob's pain and for Grace's covering her bases in case she doesn't survive, and for her family's hope. David and DAG make my chest hurt in the scene by the front door of Bob's house. Love how he can't look at Charlie, that's very real. If he looks, he'll lose it. It's when you look at the most important people in your life that you finally break down. When he has to tell the dog? Oy. You feel the loss more strongly when faced with other's who share it. Even if it's just the dog. Very brave on DD's part with the crying, and I love how he holds his arms. I certainly know the curl into a ball on the floor feeling. Kudos to DD and DAG for these scenes. Very difficult, I would imagine. And that fucking dog kills me every damn time. Love the dead singers conversation. These old guys are perfect, very believable, very entertaining. BH takes what should be a slow moment (actually the whole movie is a slow moment) and turns it into a highly entertaining moment. It just goes to show that you don't need action to be entertained. The whole movie is like that. The bike riding scene....very subtle, but perfect. It's one of the things she and BH discussed in the hospital. Riding a bike. Next on the list is dating the hunk. She'll get there. This is a woman who is living her new life to the fullest, and feeling a bit guilty about it. "I'm alive because someone else is dead." Honorable Mention to Sammy Davis Jr. Love the Survivors' Guilt/doctors checkup/massive meds aspect of the story. Adds to the reality in a movie that should be unbelievable. I bought it completely. I also love how Megan has all the kids clap for Grace when she mails the letter. Very cute, nice touch. Love the moment where Bob pauses to put on his shades near Grace. This scene and the one where the wind blows her curtains, making it seem like fate that she goes downstairs and meets Bob, should both be too much, too cliche. But they totally work for me. The whole movie has been structured this way, like a fairy tale. It's lovely. David's acting with the dog, in the scene where he comes home from yelling at the executives, is perfect. He just seems so damn tired of it. The sighs, the way he talks to the dog, he seems exhausted which is perfect for where his character is....perhaps tired of life, of trying to get along? The scene at O'Reillys is also perfect, right down to Don Lake as the guy with the transplanted hair and the loud-mouthed blind date. She nearly steals the scene, which is fine, simply because David does a great job reacting to people. He's a listener and he picks just the right reactions to the antics of those around him. Love Sophie being pissed off at missing the ticket exchange. Love Minnie's "face" moment followed by Sophie crying over the ticket. However, Grace's "flip out" line sounds kinda weird. Not quite right. I do love how Grace's character won't even say "boob job" in this movie. "Wanna grab on with two hands and run for the door?" "I don't touch men." LOL!! Poor Bob, he's so out of place with all the laughing people. He's so shy, timid. Love his reaction to Grace, love the lips. He's comes out of his shell pretty quickly and becomes almost flirty. His date makes him hurt, obviously. In a nails on the chalkboard sort of way. His reaction to Grace filling the water bottle was great, one of my favorite moments in a movie full of favorite moments. Love how he picks Grace's favorite dish to order and how he laughs at Grace's comment, perfect delivery by both MD and DD. Also love their conversation by the door, very awkward, well done. The new set of plans scene starts off a little off kilter, then gets better. The first actor to speak in the trailer is not an actor, I would guess. Adore the scene with Jim Belushi, BH and MD. The whole priest thing is perfect. Love the little kid who mimics everyone. His smiling, grinning head swinging. "I have never said hell, you sonofabitch." "For Christ's sake, he's just a man!!" Don't people say that to us all the time? Nice set up for Grace not telling Bob about her surgery...the whole conversation about men treating her as broken. "You can't mix living and dead players." Love how David is continually looking around him in the bar, looking for Grace. Love how she gets really awkward. Delightful scene inside and out in the garden. Too much to even talk about. Love the way he delivers the "you smell great" line. Love how the old guys hide when they come back in. How she runs to tell Megan that she met someone. "Hairy legs are your only link to reality." "you should needlepoint that on a pillow." LOL! Love the scene on the roof top. Very chivalrous how he gives her his coat and then asks to hold her hand. Nice ass too. Favorite scene is the slap/kiss and David's reaction to MD in it. Absolutely love how he kisses her, and her reaction with the bowling ball. Happy sigh, indeed. Great ass when bowling too. Love the "that's for you, baby." Love the old guys dancing. The scene on the couch, the way Bob talks about Elizabeth, etc. has always bothered me for some reason. I love it when he starts kissing on her, but prior to that it seems awkward. The only truly awkward scene in the entire movie, the rest were awkward by design. I do love all the popcorn bits though, David is very good at that sort of comedy. I think MD does a terrific job in her realization that Elizabeth was her heart donor. Very honest reaction, real fear. Poor Bob, he has no idea what he might have done to cause this reaction. That hairline, the creative type.... Love Grace's reaction to hearing Bob's voice, how she closes her eyes, then hugs him really tight like it's for the last time. David is perfect (great bulge) with the little trumpet sound. He's the perfect man. Like the unspoken words between Megan and Grace, after they load the bike into the van. Nice touch. I like how people are giving both of them coffee to try to help them out. Nice parallels in how they relate the story to other people. Nice little touch of when they see that Bob has shown up at the restaurant. They want to be inside when he talks. "I ache for Grace" Beautiful. Love Mr. Bennington in the end. Hilarious. When the ape comes out always makes me cry for some reason. The music, David's voice, etc...gets me every time. But then, the whole movie has that effect on me.
